The next decade of manufacturing jobs will have less of hyper repetitive tasks characterized by the 20th-century assembly lines. Instead, jobs and skills will gradually focus on learning how to use new tools to automate processes and improve the factory’s shop floor operations.

Data analytics & visualization
Engineers of the 21st century will be expected to automate data collection by directly tapping into machine PLCs (programmable logic controllers) to collect data and visualize it on interactive dashboards. Good control of data analytics and visualization shall allow supervisors to monitor the factory performance in real-time and deploy troubleshooting or other interventions whenever required. Organizations that invest in Data analytics and visualization will also be able to aggregate internal & external data (integrating datasets from suppliers, clients, and or other external sources) to improve the demand forecasting process.

Effective teamwork was a challenge even before the global pandemic. And for manufacturing departments and factories, lockdown made it harder. In the future, digitized factories will offer less top-down interactions. However, working well towards common goals (such as safety, production targets etc) or towards group projects requiring different experts are still remaining a focal point for organizations. The ability of the manufacturing workforce to “work well with others” is critical to succeeding in the factory transformation challenge.

The demand should only increase for workers able to use CAD/CAM softwares, or a qualified workforce experienced at creating and modifying CNC programs. A general baseline understanding of how manufacturing systems works is becoming mandatory. Although cloud systems or SAAS softwares may require no coding experience, it will be increasingly important to know how to operate change and modifications in such systems.

Even more so in the future, manufacturing professionals will rely on systems to perform automated and complex activities. System thinking is the ability to understand, detect, and analyze recurring patterns occurring in systems in order to make better decisions. At advanced levels, system thinking skills allow predicting the impact of change in the system; such as identifying the recurring causes of delay and their impact on the overall process.

Data programming language
The adoption of Automation and robot technologies requires data programming skills to monitor robot performance or to troubleshoot systems. Different kinds of programming and technology skills will be needed for different fields. Supervisors on automated manufacturing lines may need to be able to fix a PLC and at the most advanced level, the ability to program bots. Companies may consider acquiring programming skills “in house” to rely less on external vendors and to optimize the factory efficiency.
